This is a big week of birthdays in music history! Today marks the birth of composers John Field (c. 1782) and Franz Xaver Mozart (1791).
Irish composer and pianist John Field is widely accepted as the father of the nocturne. He was regarded by his contemporaries (Chopin - who championed the nocturne, Brahms, Schumann, and Liszt).
Franz Xaver was the youngest of six children born to W.A. Mozart and was a moderately successful composer and musician in his own right. Franz Xaver received musical training from Antonio Salieri and Johann Nepomuk Hummel.
