Caterina Jarboro (1898-1986) was the first black prima donna of a U.S. opera company.
Jarboro was hired by Alfredo Salmaggi in 1933 to sing with his opera company for which she took on the role of Seleka in Meyerbeer's L'Africaine. Further, Jarboro is widely regarded as the first African-American opera singer to ever sing on an American opera stage.
